MEANWHILE THE ICE MELTS
THE AMAZON BURNS
Why Is This Happening?
Amazon fires are deliberately started
to clear the land for agriculture and cattle farming.
The trees are cut and left to dry and then
the wood is set on fire so the ashes can fertilise the soil.
This land clearing happens every year but not normally at this intensity. The sheer scale of the fires is exceptional and the direct result of sharp
increases in deforestation rates by farmers going largely
unchecked by the Brazilian government.
Almost 73,000 fires have been recorded in the Amazon rainforest already this year. It’s August 2019 and 85% more fires than in the whole of 2018.
