Mayfield Primary School – Ealing, UK
Mayfield Primary School is a school of just over 400 pupils aged between 3 and 11. It is in a very new (2018) building in Hanwell, in the west of London. It has Brent Valley Park immediately to the north and Brent Valley Golf Club immediately to the south.
Hanwell is in the London Borough of Ealing and about 9 miles (14km) due west of the centre of the city. It is the western-most part of the Borough and the school grounds have the River Brent as part of the boundary which is the Borough boundary as well. Hanwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book and even before that in 959AD.
Hanwell has various claims to fame: the first major structural contract for Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western Railway was the Wharncliffe Viaduct, built in 1836-37 which takes trains from London Paddington to Bristol and the West Country. It was a major target for German bombers during World War 2, but was never hit. Today it is thought to house the largest bat colony in London.
Also in Hanwell, and of particular interest to Bowdlefloders, is Brent Lodge Park and Animal Centre which is a small zoo with several exotic species including: Mara, Capybara, Meerkats, Caribbean Flamingo and Crested Porcupine, Emperor Tamarin monkeys and Ring-tailed Lemurs.
